Erasmus+ Study

- English subtitles available in the video -

All students who are regularly enrolled at a German university can study at foreign partner universities with Erasmus+ in order to expand their professional, social and cultural skills and improve their career prospects. They get to know the academic system of these universities as well as their teaching and learning methods.

Application deadlines:

For mobilities in academic year 2025/26: January 31, 2025

For mobilities starting in the spring/summer semester 2026 additionally: July 31, 2025 (only remaining places)

Advantages of studying abroad with Erasmus+

  • academic recognition of study achievements abroad
  • exemption from tuition fees at the receiving institution
  • financial support as a contribution to travel and subsistence costs abroad
  • support in preparing the mobility (cultural, linguistic, organisational)
  • Top-ups for students with fewer opportunities (students with children, students with disabilities or chronic illness, students from non-academic backgrounds and working students)
  • Additional funding for actual costs incurred by students with disabilities or chronic illness and students with children

Entitlements and Obligations

The entitlements and obligations of students participating in the Erasmus+ programme are laid out in the "Erasmus+ Student Charter", which is handed out to each student before the start of the mobility.

The Student Charter is also available here:

Erasmus+ Student Charter

For example, all participants are required to submit a report in EU Commission's online tool as well as evidence of eligibility (e.g. on the duration of the stay) after completion of the mobility.

Application

Application deadlines

The deadline for submitting your Erasmus+ application is January 31, 2025 for studies beginning in the winter semester 2025/26 and also if the mobility is to begin in the spring/summer semester* 2026.

For mobilities beginning in the spring/summer semester 2026 you can also submit applications until July 31, 2025. However, you can only get remaining places at the host institutions after January 31. Also, if you submit by the July deadline, it is more likely that you will not be able to receive financial support.

*Please note that the summer semester at universities abroad usually starts already in January or February. Therefore, it is called spring semester rather than summer semester there.

Application process

Enter your data in the application portal for Erasmus+ study mobilities and follow the instructions.

Please note:

Please enter at least two possible host institutions to increase your chances of getting an exchange place.
Students from the field of Health Promotion must specify at least two possible host institutions.

Documents that you must enclose with the application
  • Certificate of proficiency in your main language of instruction at the desired host institution (see also below)
Students studying in an English-taught study programme do not need to submit a language certificate for English. In this case, please upload a blank document instead of the language certificate.
  • Detailed curriculum vitae in tabular form with information on further foreign language skills, study interests and focal points, as well as commitment and interests outside of studies (in the main language of instruction at the desired host university or in English)
  • Letter of motivation (about 1 page) explaining why you would like to study in the selected country / institution (personal and professional reasons) and how you are preparing for the mobility (in the main language of instruction at the selected institution or in English)
The letter of motivation should be addressed to your ECTS Coordinator
, as they will review your application and assign it to a host institution. If you have indicated more than one possible host institution in your application (2nd and 3rd priority), you should also briefly explain why you have chosen those.
  • Current overview of grades that can be obtained in the student service portal
You do not need to have this overview confirmed by the Examination Office.
Students who are in the 1st semester of a bachelor's programme at the time of application do not need to submit a grade overview.
Students who are applying before or in the first master's semester, please submit the last grade overview from the bachelor's program.
  • Current certificate of enrollment
  • Portfolio (only students from the field of Design)

Please note:

These application documents will remain at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and will not be forwarded to your host institution.
If you have any questions regarding the application documents, please drop in during consultation hours (see info column on the right) or make a consultation appointment. We will be happy to help you.

How to obtain a language certificate

If you are currently taking a suitable foreign language course at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, you can ask the course instructor to issue you the certificate. The language certificate should provide information about your knowledge in the main language of instruction at the host institution. A form that can be used for this purpose can be found here:

Language Certificate Form

In Stendal, Ms Angret Zierenberg, English lecturer and coordinator of foreign language training at the Stendal campus, and Ms Bianca Weber, teacher for ABWL/Business English, will also issue you a language certificate using the above-mentioned form.

If you have a language certificate such as TOEFL, DELE or similar that is not older than 2 years, you can also submit this with your application.

All students who do not fall into the above groups can take a language test in English, French or Spanish at the Berlitz language school in Magdeburg. The test costs 55 euros. You will receive a receipt which you can then submit to the International Office at Magdeburg-Stendal University for reimbursement.

Please make an appointment in advance:

Berlitz - Magdeburg Language Center
Hasselbachplatz 3
39104 Magdeburg

magdeburg@berlitz.de
Tel: 0391/541 4688

For reimbursement, please submit the following form, an invoice plus proof of payment or the receipt for the language test fees. Proof of the reason for the language certificate is also required. The Erasmus application itself or reference to an existing Erasmus application will serve as proof.

Request for reimbursement

After the Application

At Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences
  • The ECTS Coordinators assess the applications received and assign the applicants to the respective partner institutions. The main assessment criteria are: academic performance, motivation and language skills.
  • The International Office nominates the selected applicants to the partner institutions within six to eight weeks after the application deadline.
  • The partner institutions decide (on the basis of a separate application, see below) who will be admitted to the programme.
  • Around April, all admitted students receive detailed information from the International Office, including information on the Erasmus+ mobility grant and insurance issues.
  • Around August/September, the first installment of the mobility grant will be paid.

In the case of applications for a later start of the study abroad programme, this procedure applies with a corresponding time delay.

At the host institution

In most cases, the host institution will contact the applicants directly after the nomination (see above). It is then necessary to apply again directly to that institution. Information on how and by when you will need to apply will be provided by the host institution.

Please note that the application documents you submit for selection at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences will not be sent to the host institution. You will need to apply to them again separately.

If the host institution does not contact you soon after the nomination (you will be notified by us when you are nominated), it is advisable to look for the relevant information yourself on their website or, in case of doubt, to contact the International Office there. If you do not receive any information at all, please contact us (the International Office of Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences).

The application information almost always includes information on how to find accommodation in the host country.

During and after the end of the study abroad period

During the course of and after the end of your study abroad programme, you will need to submit a number of supporting documents and reports. You will receive further information about this after your application has been received. Once all the necessary documents have been submitted, you will receive the 2nd installment of the mobility grant.
Upon completion of your studies abroad, you will receive a Transcript of Records from your host institution about your academic achievements, which will be the basis for their recognition at Magdeburg-Stendal UAS.

Learning Agreement

The Learning Agreement is a central document for your study abroad period and the basis for the later recognition of your academic achievements. It lists the courses you will take at the host institution and how they will be recognized upon your return and is signed by yourself, your ECTS Coordinator and a representative of the host institution.

The Learning Agreement will be circulated exclusively digitally via the Erasmus-Without-Paper-Network. You create the Learning Agreement in your Mobility-Online account that you opened when you applied for the programme.

You will receive further information from the International Office of Magdeburg-Stendal UAS after your nomination at the host institution.

For further information on the recognition of academic achievements obtained abroad see here.

Financial support

Notice

Participation in the programme does not necessarily entail financial support. Since only a certain amount of funding is made available to each institution, no financial support is possible if the funding allocated to the institution is exhausted. However, the other benefits of the programme (e.g., tuition waivers) may still be available in this case (zero-grant mobility).

Although we aim to provide financial support to all admitted participants, funding cannot be guaranteed. Especially if you submit your applications by the July deadline, funding options may be limited.
The available funding will be awarded to admitted participants in the order in which complete applications are received by the International Office.

Linguistic support

The European Commission provides an online language test for most European languages. This is mandatory for all students/graduates (does not apply to native speakers) to take in the working language (if the language is offered) before the start of the mobility.

The test is not a selection criterion for funding in the Erasmus+ program. It is intended to serve as a placement test to document their current language level after the selection of participants to be funded in Erasmus+.

The EU Commission also licenses online language courses in the above languages to universities, which are made available to a certain percentage of participants based on their test results.

Possibilities for language preparation in Magdeburg can be found here (tab "Language Preparation").
